The umbilical cord contains a large amount of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), more in fact than the cord blood itself. These cells can up-regulate immune system, increase the likelihood of successful umbilical cord blood transplants and suppress graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), reducing the chances of rejection. It is therefore more effective to transplant HSC together with MSC.
In addition to minimize rejection reactions from the umbilical cord blood transplants, the medical world has recently become aware that MSC have excellent potential for in vitro expansion and multiple-differentiation, which can help to repair organs and tissues. These cells can be further differentiated in the laboratory so that they grow into tissues including bone, cartilage, muscle, nerve and cardiac muscle.
